How sweep it was.

The College of the Albemarle, playing its first baseball season since 1976, opened Carolinas Junior College Conference play this weekend by taking three road games from Rockingham Community College.

On Sunday, the Dolphins (9-4 overall, 3-0 conference) rallied from a 7-0 deficit to post a 12-9 win in the completion of a game that was suspended by rain after one inning Saturday, then scored an 8-7 victory in 10 innings to close out the series.

COA beat Rockingham 14-4 on Saturday.

“This is awesome,” Dolphins coach Norbie Wilson said. “I know it’s early, but 3-0 in the conference is a whole lot better than 0-3. Our kids battled and battled all weekend. We have 25 guys on the team and it seems like every one of them was involved in this.”

The Dolphins scored the winning run in the 10th inning of Sunday’s second game when Kyle Carlson crossed the plate while Eddie Perkins beat the throw on a potential inning-ending double play ball with out out and the bases loaded.

COA, which trailed 5-1 at one point in the game, went ahead 7-5 in the top of the eighth, but allowed Rockingham to tie it at 7-7 in the bottom of the frame when Perkins couldn’t hold the lead in relief. Perkins wound up getting the win and helped the cause by driving in three runs.

Tyler Barrington (Northeastern), Jake Stone and David Hughes all had two hits for the winners. Hughes knocked in two runs.

The day started with a huge comeback by the Dolphins who gave up seven runs in the first inning Saturday before rain stopped the game.

COA chipped away at the lead, finally tying it in the sixth on a single by Cam Stevenson. Doubles by Stone and Gavin Mizelle in the seventh sent the Dolphins ahead to stay.

Stone finished with two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Mizzelle and Barrington added two hits.

Jonathan Brantley (Lawrence Academy) pitched five innings and gave up two earned runs to get the win and Perkins notched the save.

Saturday, Josh Pryor knocked in four runs on three hits to lead the Dolphins to a rout. Stone had two hits and two RBIs, Carlson two hits and two RBIs and Barrington had a three-run triple.

Northeastern grad Kirk Higgins ran his record to 3-0 by allowing four hits over five innings.
