Dolphins suffer first conference losses

There’s a trend developing here, and College of The Albemarle coach Norbie Wilson doesn’t like it.

“Some of the things that plagued us the other day hurt us again,” he said Sunday after the Dolphins dropped a doubleheader to Brunswick CC 9-7 and 14-6 at Pasquotank High School and suffered their first Carolinas Junior College Conference defeats.

Wilson was referring to a 23-4 thumping by second-ranked Pitt CC earlier in the week that saw COA do itself in with errors, walks and hit batsmen.

“Once again, we gave them too many outs,” Wilson said, “and they took advantage of it with their bats.”

The more troubling defeat Sunday was the nightcap. Jake Stone’s two-run double keyed a five-run first inning that gave the Dolphins a 5-3 lead. The game stayed tight until the seventh, when Brunswick exploded for seven runs.

COA committed four errors, allowed two walks and hit two batters to supplement Brunswick’s 16 hits.

Stone, who homered in both ends of the twinbill, had two hits and drove in three runs for the Dolphins. Camden grad Bryon Brown and Kyle Carlson each went 3-for-4.

In the opener, COA (12-8 overall, 6-2 conference) raced to a 6-1 lead after two innings, but the visitors chipped away and finally broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the seventh.

Tyler Barrington (Northeastern) and Matt Ittner had two hits for the Dolphins while Stone jacked a three-run homer and Gavin Mizzelle contributed a two-run double.
