Strong finish: Dolphins are winners in first season

KILL DEVIL HILLS — A banner weekend for Eddie Perkins meant a winning regular season for College of The Albemarle baseball team. But Perkins won’t take any of the credit. The Chesapeake, Va. native hit a two-run double in the eighth inning Sunday, giving the Dolphins their first lead of the game en route to beating Patrick Henry Community College 6-5 at First Flight High School. It gave COA the series clincher after taking the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Coy Tillett Memorial Field in Manteo. In that game, Perkins struck out 11 and hit a two-run homer in a 9-6 victory. The Patriots, who were ranked 13th in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll last week, won the second game 1-0. On Sunday, Perkins shifted to first base. He was 0-for-3 and staring at a 1-2 count in his fourth at-bat before lacing a double to left-center, scoring Ross Cardwell and Jake Stone. Perkins deflected any praise and cited the play of his teammates. “I couldn’t do it by myself,” Perkins said. “It was the group of guys behind me. Our pitching and defense was great today.” With Sunday’s victory, the Dolphins finished 20-19 overall and 13-12 in Region 10 play. The region tournament starts May 14 in Martinsville, Va., home of Patrick Henry, and coach Norbie Wilson is not certain of his team’s seed. He is certain about one goal COA accomplished in the program’s first year since 1976. “I know we have a winning season, and I feel very fortunate about that,” Wilson said. “I think our team consistently got better.” On Sunday, the pitching and defense was consistent for most of the first six innings. Patrick Henry broke it open in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs, all with two outs. COA went into the bottom of the eighth with just two hits, one of those a solo homer by Jake Stone that tied it at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Stone was also effective alongside Perkins at the plate Sunday. With the bases loaded, the Dolphins’ top hitter knocked a grounder into right field to score Tyler Barrington and Kyle Carlson. Gavin Mizelle plated another runner on a single to make it 5-4 before Perkins capped the Dolphins’ five-run rally that put them up for good. Wilson sensed his club could get back into contention against Patrick Henry starting pitcher Chris Horne if it went deep into counts. “The offspeed gave us trouble, and he was doing a very good job of masking his change-up,” Wilson said. “We tried to scoot up on the plate and take some of it away, and what we were trying to do was wait until the later innings. “We told our guys to keep battling and as he gets tired the breaking ball won’t have nearly the bite and the fastball won’t have nearly the sting. We did a great job battling.” Reliever Ross Jarzynka got the win after coming on for starter and former Northeastern hurler Kirk Higgins. While the Dolphins started strong this season, Wilson knew the competition would also improve, and is glad to get a series win heading into tourney play. “In the last two weeks we’ve played all the top dogs,” Wilson said. “We haven’t beaten them all, but we’ve competed very well with all of them, and it gives us confidence heading into the tournament.” |
