Rain has COA's tourney hopes on hold

The College of the Albemarle baseball team spent Monday afternoon attempting to throw strikes — but not on the baseball field, Idled by a rainfall that suspended their losers bracket game at the Region 10 tournament in Martinsville (Va.) Sunday night and lasted through Monday, the Dolphins headed off to a bowling alley. “The kids were bored, so we took them bowling,” said COA coach Norbie Wilson. “We had a great time. All the players and four coaches. Then we went and chowed down at a Chinese buffet.” It was fun, but the Dolphins would rather have been finishing up their business against Wilkes Community College. COA held a 7-2 lead over Wilkes in the top of the fifth before the rains came. Weather permitting, they’ll pick up the game at the same point at 11 a.m. today. If they win, the Dolphins will meet Southeastern CC in another consolation game immediately afterward. Jake Stone’s three-run double, a two-run double by Kyle Carlson and Matt Ittner’s triple had Wilkes on the ropes. Not only was COA up by five runs, Wilkes was getting weary. “They played a 15-inning game right before playing us Sunday, so they were tired,” Wilson said. “Now they’ve had a chance to rest up. “We really want to get this one in. If we win, we made it to the final four of the tournament. That was our goal coming in.” |
