May 18, 2009 COA finished off Wilkes Community College on Tuesday morning in a completion of the game delayed by rain from Sunday night. The Dolphins had taken a 7-2 lead heading into the 5th inning against Wilkes on Sunday night in Round 3 of the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament, before rain settled in, drenching the Martinsville, Va area for a full day. All games Monday were postponed. COA and Wilkes resumed play at 9am on Tuesday, and the Dolphins quickly went back to work, scoring another run in the top of the 5th, and four more in the top of the 7th. The Cougars added a Nate Wright two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th, leaving the final margin at 12-4. Jonathan Brantley picked up the win, pitching the final innings on Tuesday. Chad Gurganus pitched the first four innings on Sunday. Leadoff hitter Kyle Carlson led the way offensively for the Dolphins, going 3 for 5 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. Jake Stone was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs coming off a bases-loaded double. Eddie Perkins was 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs, and Matt Ittner was 3 for 4 with 3 runs. With four teams left in the tournament, COA will resume play at 2:00 on Tuesday, facing Southeastern Community College. Southeastern eliminated Brunswick Community College on Sunday by a score of 7-4. |
