Although the College of The Albemarle baseball team was eliminated from the Region 10 tournament after a 6-3 loss to Southeastern Community College in a losers bracket game in Martinsville, Va., Tuesday, the first-year Dolphins achieved their goals of placing in the top four of the tournament and finishing the season with a winning record. A 12-4 win over Wilkes CC in the completion of a rain-suspended game earlier in the day assured COA of both. The Dolphins (22-21), playing their first season since 1976, fell behind 6-0 to Southeastern in the top of the third and did not recover, despite two home runs from Jake Stone and 6 1-3 innings of scoreless relief by Ross Jarzynka and Eddie Perkins. COA had plenty of opportunities as it banged out nine hits and collected seven walks, but stranded 14 runners. Stone led the Dolphins with the two homers and three RBIs. Eddie Perkins, who started the game at first base, went 4-for-4. In the victory over Wilkes, Stone and Perkins each drove in two runs and Kyle Carlson had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs. |
