Case Statement for Intercollegiate Athletics

College of The Albemarle Intercollegiate Athletics Abstract

Opportunity Changes Everything!

College of The Albemarle believes that intercollegiate athletics can provide the opportunity for students that change everything!  Students will have opportunities to engage in competitive situations and learn many of life’s lessons that are taught best, not in a classroom, but on the field of competition.

Our Heritage

In 1960, history was made once again in Northeastern North Carolina when the state’s first comprehensive community college was established in Elizabeth City.  Almost 50 years later, College of The Albemarle remains one of the premier community colleges in North Carolina.

The Founders envisioned an institution that embodied a total, well-rounded experience—academic, social and physical.  Part of that goal was intercollegiate athletics.  Throughout the 1960s and 1970, COA athletics were a source of pride and spirit on campus.  Unfortunately, in 1977, financial pressures forced the Board of Trustees to discontinue intercollegiate athletics.

The visionary spirit of our Founders is alive today.  The Board of Trustees and the College administration believe that the reinstatement of intercollegiate athletics brings value to the College community, to the seven counties served by the College, and particularly to the students participating.

The Opportunity

The Board of Trustees enthusiastically supports the reinstatement of intercollegiate athletics dependent upon the ability to provide a permanent source of private financial support.  The challenge is to raise $1,000,000 in endowment support plus an additional $100,000 for start-up costs.

A group of committed community leaders has come together to make this goal a reality for College of The Albemarle.  These men and women will be asking prospective individual donors, as well as businesses and family foundations, for their support.

With the community’s support, College of The Albemarle will once again bring to Northeastern North Carolina an accessible, affordable, post-high school educational experience that includes intercollegiate athletics.
