Elizabeth City Campus Update 10/3/11
On Monday, we closed the Elizabeth City campus immediately after receiving what college officials considered to be a credible threat that a certain individual may come to the campus to do harm. We made this decision based on the information that was available to the college at the time. We immediately dismissed all students, faculty, and staff, notified local law enforcement and secured the Elizabeth City campus.
While it is unfortunate that today’s closure caused disruption and anxiety, we felt it was the right thing to do in order to protect the safety of the whole campus community. I want to commend the campus community for their calm cooperation and orderly departure.
Based on an investigation by the Elizabeth City Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation, we have now determined that there is no credible or imminent threat of harm to our campus or the community.
In light of the ongoing criminal investigation, with which we are cooperating, we will not release any further details at this time.
We are now confident that any potential harm from this incident has been avoided, and that teaching and learning can return to normal at the college. We want to extend our thanks to Chief Crudup, the ECPD, and the SBI for their immediate response and professional assistance. We also want to thank the entire college family for their patience, support and understanding at this difficult and unusual time.
