ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Dr. James C. “Jimmie” Williamson, the new North Carolina Community College System President, visited College of The Albemarle’s (COA) Elizabeth City Campus on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The Regional Meeting for the Northeast Prosperity Zone was one of ten meetings Dr. Williamson has held across the state.
“We were delighted to welcome Dr. Williamson to our Elizabeth City Campus today,” said Dr. Kandi W. Deitemeyer, president of COA. “Dr. Williamson was able to meet many of our exceptional faculty and staff, see just a small glimpse of our more than 40 programs of study offered by the college and understand the unique aspects of northeastern North Carolina as it relates to the state and the community college system.”
Others who attended the Regional Meeting with Dr. Williamson included Clark Twiddy and Jim Rose – both members of the NC State Board of Community Colleges. Clark Twiddy is a Dare County resident and is the operations director at Twiddy & Company in Duck. Jim Rose, a resident of Raleigh, is the Regional President for Yadkin Bank and travels throughout the northeast area frequently.
While at the Elizabeth City Campus, Dr. Williamson was able to tour several areas including the college’s Associate Degree Nursing lab, the Small Business Center, Welding Lab, the Medical Laboratory Technology classroom and the Anatomy and Physiology classroom – just to name a few. John Sanders, Program Coordinator and Instructor for the Aviation Systems Technology program offered at the Regional Aviation and Technical Training Center, was on hand with a small airplane that the aviation students built as a class project. Dr. Williamson and guests were also able to experience students discovering the gown and glove technique for Surgical Technologists in the college’s state-of-the-art operating simulation laboratory.
Upon completion of the tour, Dr. Williamson, Clark Twiddy, Jim Rose, Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, S. Paul O’Neal, COA’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Coleen Santa Ana, Board of Trustees member and president of Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, enjoyed lunch and discussed many of the college’s opportunities and unique offerings.
Dr. Williamson, the NC Community College’s eighth system president began his new role on July 1, 2016. He previously served as president and CEO of the South Carolina Technical College System, serving 27 years in higher education in South Carolina – rising through roles from registrar to dean to two college presidencies and then to System President.
