Campus Cruiser Blackboard Calendars En Espanol Questions
College of The Albemarle students attended a green workshop entitled “Ordinary Materials – Extraordinary Objects” at the COA Roanoke Island Campus jewelry studio on April 29 and 30, from 10 am to 4 pm. Visiting artist Marlene True was the workshop instructor, assisted by Kathryn Osgood, COA jewelry faculty. The workshop offered COA students a fun and challenging opportunity to learn about fabricating small objects and jewelry in an environmentally friendly manner by using recycled materials creatively.

Color, imagery and text used in design can entice, engage or tell a story. In this class students learned to select, alter and incorporate those same elements found on tin cans and other found objects to create narrative boxes of personal meaning and expression. Workshop demonstrations included preparing tin for cutting, tin can deconstruction, fabricating a box using only cold connections, scoring and bending tin, riveting, and soldering techniques for tin. Workshop participants transformed the ordinary into extraordinary art.

Marlene True is a studio artist living and working in Richmond, Virginia. She earned her MFA from East Carolina University and her work has been exhibited widely in numerous exhibitions throughout the US and a recent exhibition in Korea. Her work is in many private collections and has been published in The Fine Art of the Tin Can, Fabulous Jewelry from Found Objects and Mixed Media Collage Jewelry.
