ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Celebrating Florence Nightingale’s birthday, thirty-one Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students received their nursing pins at College of The Albemarle’s (COA’s) thirty-eighth annual pinning ceremony on Wednesday night. Held in the COA Auditorium, the evening ceremony was a traditional service and included pinning lapel pins, lighting nightingale lamps, and taking the International Council of Nurses’ Pledge.

Nursing awards were presented by Vice President of Instruction, Althea Riddick, Nursing Instructors Chris Robertson, Kathryn Miller, and Amy Beickert. Academic Recognition Certificates were presented to Emily Briggs, Dalia Frasca, Stephanie Frazier, Amanda Halladay, Joanna Lindquist, Jessica Palumbo, Amanda Strickland, Amanda Surface, and Michelle Ward. These graduates maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better throughout their time in the program. The Academic Excellence Award, presented to the graduate with the highest grade point average in the class, went to Amanda Strickland and Amanda Surface, both of whom maintained a 4.0 grade point average. The Dr. L. Everett Sawyer Award, presented to the student who most exemplifies conscientiousness and zeal for learning, was awarded to two students, Jessica Palumbo and Michael Whitehurst. The Dr. Zack D. Owens and Martha A. Owens Award, presented for courteousness, knowledge, and advocacy for patients was awarded to Amanda Halladay.
