COA Presidential Search

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that they have asked Robert Wynegar, EdD, to assume the position of President of College of The Albemarle (COA), pending final negotiations.

Robert WynegarDr. Robert Wynegar was the Vice President of Academic and Student affairs at Western Nevada College, where he provided strategic direction and operational support for the institution. He led the creation of associate degree and certificate programs to support an emerging industrial base in rural northern Nevada, as well as workforce development options designed specifically for Click-Bond, Panasonic, Tesla, and the Nevada Department of Finance. Through a series of academic and student success initiatives, Western has awarded a record number of degrees and certificates each of the last three years, and has increased the job placement rate for all AAS and certificate completers to 95 percent.

While at Western Nevada College, Dr. Wynegar led the expansion of online degrees and certificates for place- or time-bound students, adding seven associate degrees and a dozen certificates to Western’s online catalog. By partnering with regional school systems, he also led the creation of an award winning high school dual enrollment program that serves more than 400 students, 100 of whom are on track to earn an associates or certificate this spring. He is currently leading a major college-wide effort to increase student retention and reduce enrollment variability.

Dr. Wynegar previously served as Dean of Associate of Arts at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, and as Dean of Math and Sciences at Darton College in Albany, Georgia. His career in higher education began at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he was a faculty member and Director of Developmental Mathematics. He has a proven record of creating programs that improve student access and success, particularly among traditionally underrepresented populations. He is well versed in fiscal affairs, with an extensive history of successful budget management and more than $26 million in external funding.

He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics from Tennessee Technological University, a M.S. in Industrial Engineering from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Valdosta State University. As a first-generation college student, Dr. Wynegar has drawn upon personal experiences from almost 30 years in higher education to craft a leadership style that is inclusive, supportive and transparent, while emphasizing student success, faculty and staff development, and the community the college serves.
