Steps for Success

Welcome to College of The Albemarle.  For a successful semester, follow the registration steps outlined below.  Please call your local campus with any questions you may have.

1. APPLY FOR ADMISSION
Apply to College of The Albemarle online at the CFNC website.

2. APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Apply for federal financial aid and COA private scholarships by March 15th to meet the college’s priority deadline.  You may continue to apply for scholarships after March 15; however, available scholarships may be limited. For more information and applications, visit the Scholarship and Student Aid area of the website or contact financial aid at (252) 335-0821, ext. 2385.

3. REQUEST TRANSCRIPTS
We encourage you to have your high school/GED and college transcripts (if applicable) sent to the Admissions Office at the Elizabeth City Campus to ensure that you are registered properly.  These items are helpful to ensure that you may receive transfer credit and credit for any necessary prerequisites.  These transcripts may also be necessary for acceptance into our selective programs and to receive VA benefits.  Please be advised that the college will not accept transfer credits after the end of your first semester of study without the approval of the Director of Admissions or the Vice President of Student Success and Enrollment Management (this does not include breaks in enrollment).

4. TAKE THE PLACEMENT TEST
A placement test is required for all curriculum programs. All or part of the placement test may be waived with appropriate SAT/ACT scores and/or equivalent transfer credit from a regionally accredited college.  Click here for sample questions.  To schedule a placement test, or for more information, contact Student Services. Please note, certain programs may require placement testing regardless of previous test scores or transfer credit.  Please call or e-mail the program of study contact for additional information.

5. MEET WITH AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR
To prepare for your meeting, review the current schedule of classes posted on our website and complete a trial schedule. (For a sample trial schedule, click here).  To determine what classes are needed for your degree, refer to the Programs of Study section on the website.  Refer to the CAA Course List on pages 56-61 of the college catalog to determine what courses satisfy general education and elective requirements.  Review the courses descriptions on pages 92-137 of the college catalog to determine if a course has a prerequisite and verify that you have satisfied the prerequisite.  Arrive to your appointment on time and with a completed trial schedule.  You may also wish to bring a list of any questions you may have.  Please be sure to ask the advisor to show you how to register online.

6. PAY TUITION AND FEES BY POSTED DEADLINE
Visit the Tuition and Fees section on this website.   Information on our payment plan is available in the Student Services area on this website or please contact the business office.  Information on financial aid is also available on the site.

7. GET YOUR STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARD
Bring a copy of your schedule to the Front Desk to get your ID card.  Your ID card serves as your identification on campus, as your library card, and to notify places of business that you are a COA student.

8. ATTEND NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
New Student Orientation is generally held a week or so before classes begin.  Contact Student Services at your campus for more information.

9. COMPLETE THE MOODLE ONLINE ORIENTATION
Before you can register for any online courses you must complete the online MOODLE Orientation. You must log into Moodle for each of your online courses as soon as classes start to demonstrate attendance in the course.  Instructors have the right to drop students for non-attendance, including the first day of class.

10. PURCHASE YOUR BOOKS
Follett Bookstore is generally on campus for a limited before classes begin.  You may also purchase your books on line or by calling the Elizabeth City Bookstore at (252) 331-5964 or (252) 335-0821, ext. 2377.  Students outside Elizabeth City receive free shipping

11. ATTEND CLASS
Make sure to attend all classes. Instructors have the right to drop students for lack of attendance. The first day of class is important because instructors will inform you of the work you will need to complete. Missing the first day of class will be counted against you in the attendance policy.
