Nurse Aide Level I
This 144 hour course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents, or clients in a health care setting. Topics include communication, safety, patient rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, and mental health. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to sit for the competency exam through PearsonVue for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. Course Pre-requisites:
Must take COA’s reading placement test (need 36 on ASSET test or 61 on COMPASS test), or show a college transcript showing you passed ENG 111, to be waived from reading placement test.
Paperwork and payment are due at the time of registration.
Must attend a Nurse Aide orientation session before class starts. This is mandatory!

Students will also need to purchase a book, uniforms, original social security card and have a current TB skin test.
Certification after course has been completed satisfactorily. COA is not a testing site for Nurse Aide certification. You must contact the company PearsonVUE at www.pearsonvue.com for latest testing dates, current test cost and nearest testing centers. The two nearest testing centers to Elizabeth City are in Ahoskie, NC and Greenville, NC.
Nurse Aide Level II
The Nurse Aide II course prepares graduates to perform more complex skills for patients or residents. A skill evaluation is required for documenting student competency. The 176 hour course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Nurse Aide II has the same pre-requisites as Nurse Aide I, with the addition of producing a copy of your HS transcript or GED. In addition, students must currently be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry.
