Transfer Eligibility and Admission Requirements

Do you want to transfer to earn a higher degree? Credits earned at College of The Albemarle (COA) in curricula leading to an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Fine Arts, and some of those leading to an Associate in Applied Science and an Associate in General Education, are transferable to senior colleges and universities.

College Transfer Pathways

To qualify, you’ll need to:

• Be a junior or senior
• Have a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA)
• Be making progress toward high school graduation
• Meet course prerequisites and admission requirements
• Be recommended by your high school principal (or designee)

To maintain eligibility, you’ll need to continue to make progress toward high school graduation and meet the college’s academic progress policy for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways

To qualify, you’ll need to:

• Be a junior or senior
• Have either a 3.0 GPA or the recommendation of your high school principal (or designee)
• Be making progress toward high school graduation
• Meet course prerequisites and admission requirements
• Pursue one of the 16 high school Career and Technical Education clusters

To maintain eligibility, you’ll need to continue to make progress toward high school graduation and meet the college’s academic progress policy for all students.

Cooperative Innovative High School Program Pathways

This program is available at J.P. Knapp Early College High School in Currituck and Camden Early College in Camden (pending state approval). To qualify, you’ll need to be in grade nine through 12 and meet the eligibility requirements established by the Currituck County Board of Education or Camden County Board of Education, as well as those of COA. Special preference is given to first-generation college students.

Placement and Assessment Requirements

• College transfer students: demonstrate college readiness on an approved assessment or placement test in English, reading and mathematics*
• Career and Technical Education students: demonstrate college readiness through career pathway prerequisites
• High school students may use their PLAN, PSAT, ACT or SAT assessment scores. They may also take the ASSET or NCDAP at the nearest COA campus or at their high school (if available)

*If a high school junior or senior doesn’t demonstrate college readiness on an approved assessment or placement test, they may be provisionally enrolled in a college transfer pathway. To qualify for provisional status, you’ll need to:

• Have a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5
• Have completed two years of high school English with a grade of “C” or higher
• Have completed high school Algebra II or Math III (or a higher level math class) with a grade of “C” or higher
• Obtain the written approval of the high school principal and community college president (or their designees)

A provisional status student may only register for college mathematics (MAT) and college English (ENG) courses within the chosen pathway. To be eligible to register for other pathway courses, you’ll need to first complete mathematics and English courses with a grade of “C” or higher.
