COA’s Basic Skills Program Receives $1,000 Grant from Xenith Bank

College of The Albemarle (COA) received a $1,000 grant from Xenith Bank, a division of Union Bank and Trust of Richmond, Virginia to support Basic Skills students.

Submitting a grant request through Xenith Bank, Wanda Fletcher, COA’s Basic and Transitional Studies Director, wanted to secure funds that would assist Basic Skills students’ transition to enroll in COA curriculum programs of study.

Claudine Beaman, Vice President and Branch Manager at Xenith Bank in Elizabeth City, came to COA on Monday, Jan. 22 to present the check in person.

The grant will be used to cover the last high school equivalency test for students who are registered with COA, have applied for financial aid and are set to receive their final passing transcript. “This support will encourage students to continue their education and will impact COA’s enrollment,” stated Fletcher.

COA is grateful for opportunities within our local community that support students in continuing their education.
