COA Launches Follett Access™ Program

Elizabeth City — College of The Albemarle (COA) has taken on a new initiative that will save students money on course materials for math courses and address the ever-rising cost of course materials. COA’s math department is piloting Follett Access paired with Pearson’s Inclusive Access Program beginning fall 2019. The pilot program was approved by the Board of Trustees in the spring and is a win-win for students and faculty. According to Lisa Meads, Chair of COA’s Ad Hoc Textbook Committee and Associate Professor of Mathematics, “Having all students with the required course materials on the first day of math class will ensure that everyone is ready to get started on day one and no one falls behind.”

Follett Access delivers required course materials digitally to students without ever having to visit the bookstore. For math courses, this includes the MyMathLab access code and e-book. Benefits of the Follett Access program include students having the required course materials on the first day of class; the easy access of digital course materials being accessed, managed and used; and students having the ability to obtain materials traditionally purchased through the bookstore at a significant savings. Cost savings per student ranges from $45 to $81.75 depending on the math course.

A Follett Access course materials fee will be charged to the student’s account. The student will then be responsible for paying that fee, just as the student would be responsible for obtaining textbooks for a course. The only difference is the course materials fee is paid to the business office rather than the bookstore. Students do have the option to opt out of the program and look to other third-party vendors if they wish but they will likely not be able to locate the required access code at a lower price. Students are required to have a MyMathLab access code in order to complete the required assignments in each math course. Only courses with a MAT prefix are part of this pilot program.

Students who have preregistered for the fall semester must pay the Follett Access fee by July 18, along with their tuition and fees. For questions regarding the Follett Access program, please email
