COA Receives Donation for English as a Second Language Program

Elizabeth City, North Carolina — College of The Albemarle’s (COA) College and Career Readiness program received a donation of school supplies on Friday, April 9 to be used in its English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

The supplies were generously donated by the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha from a drive the sorority held on March 20. The ESL program at COA helps adults develop the basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening; integrating the English language with topics that prepare students for everyday life, employment and citizenship. Classes are offered in the fall and spring semesters and meet twice a week in the evenings.

Dr. Kimberly Gregory, director of College and Career ReadinessCollege & Career Readiness at COA, shared her appreciation for the ESL program being chosen as a recipient of the donation. “The ESL program at COA is grateful to receive these supplies. The generous donation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. means our ESL students will be equipped with the necessary supplies as they learn to read, write and communicate using the English language. This donation removes a barrier and provides an opportunity for success for our ESL students,” she said.
