COA MLT Student Hired One Month After Graduation

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program

Cameron Mason graduated from College of The Albemarle’s MLT program in July 2020.

“After graduating from Camden County High School, I knew I wanted a career that combined the medical and technology fields. My advisor suggested the MLT program and it sounded like a great option. The program being only 18 months, as well as the class to teacher ratio, definitely helped with my decision.”

Cameron credits Terri Riddick, Assistant Professor/Program Coordinator for MLT, with providing students a quality structured curriculum that allowed them to learn everything necessary for future employment. “Ms. Riddick and all the instructors worked closely with us to help prepare us for clinical rotations. I learned all the skills I need for success such as critical thinking, technical know-how, workplace professionalism and applicable medical knowledge.”

While completing clinical rotation at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia, Cameron was encouraged to apply for a position in the microbiology lab. He applied and was hired less than a month after graduating.

Cameron now plans on using the education reimbursement CHKD offers its employees to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science from Old Dominion University.
