Jump-Start Downtown Business Plan Competition

Revving Up in Elizabeth City, NC

Second Annual Competition will award $8,500 in prizes for winning start-up business that open downtown. The first time around was so successful, Elizabeth City economic developers will do it again. Beginning today, entrepreneurs may apply to win more than $8,500 in start-up incentives and a prime location for their business, by entering Jump-Start Downtown, an Elizabeth City business plan competition.

This competition is sponsored by Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. (EDCI), the Elizabeth City Area Committee of 100 and the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Economic Development Commission.

"We are excited to work with the next wave of entrepreneurs interested in opening a business in Elizabeth City's historic downtown," said ECDI Director, Wade Nichols. "This is a great environment, with good storefront locations, planning assistance, customers who support local businesses and neighbors who want to see them succeed. Jump-Start Downtown is a creative way to bring more innovative businesses to our community."

How to Apply

Applicants, who must be 18 years or older, may apply online at the Pasquotank County Econonmic Development Commission website. Applicants have until January 26, 2016 to submit his or her business plan, which should include an executive summary, market analysis, marketing and financial plans and other documents. Any type of business is eligible to enter, so long as the proposed business location is within the boundaries of downtown Elizabeth City and occupies a street-level, street-facing storefront. If a business is located in Pasquotank County, the proposed downtown location must be an expansion. In addition, the winners must have their businesses up and running by Nov. 18, 2016.

COA Small Business Center (SBC) is a state funded organization that is part of the Small Business Center Network. The SBC provides small business owners with information they need for success, including advice on marketing, sales, bookkeeping, and management. We offer, at no cost, the following services:

Free one-on-one confidential counseling for your small business and startup venture. To schedule an appointment please complete and submit a Request for Counseling and the Small Business Center Director will contact you within 5 business days to schedule an appointment.
