Adult Basic Education Program

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at College of the Albemarle’s (COA) College and Career Readiness (CCR) program provides learning opportunities for to improve basic skills for those age 16 and over and not enrolled in a public school. Instruction is provided on the following subjects:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Computing
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving

All coursework is designed to improve the adult learner’s ability to benefit from job training and have greater opportunities, including employment. The ABE program offers:

  • Day classes
  • Online, face-to-face, and hybrid (combination of online and face-to-face) instruction
  • Alternative learning packets

COA – Elizabeth City Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
5 – 9 p.m.


To join the ABE program, complete the CCR Application for Admission.

The following documents are required for admission:

  • Social Security Card
  • Unexpired state-issued photo identification (or passport or military identification)
