College of The Albemarle Welcomes a New Co-Bot to the Machining Program

BARCO, N.C. – College of The Albemarle – Currituck (COA – Currituck) recently added a new 6-axis Universal Robotics UR5 collaborative robot to its Computer Integrated Machining program. The collaborative robot, or “co-bot,” is nicknamed “Lamont” and is designed to safely assist with repetitive and precise tasks alongside students and instructors. Students and community members can now experience firsthand how automation and robotics are shaping the future of manufacturing. The UR5 model is widely used in the manufacturing industry for its flexibility and accuracy, providing learners with practical skills that are in high demand.

“Lamont represents the future of manufacturing. Our students now have the opportunity to work with the same advanced automation technology used in leading industries, giving them a real edge in the workforce,” said David Chambers, COA Instructor and Program Coordinator for Computer Integrated Machining. “I named the robot after my best friend since kindergarten, which makes this addition even more meaningful to me and our program.”
