Elizabeth City, NC – College of the Albemarle (COA) and Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America are pleased to announce that applications are available for the Cliff Markham Memorial Machinist Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. This scholarship, designed to support students enrolled in the Computer Integrated Machining (CIM) program, commemorates the legacy of the late Cliff Markham.

Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America established the Cliff Markham Memorial Machinist Scholarship Endowment in 2021 in honor of Cliff, a graduate of COA’s machining program who dedicated over 27 years of his career to Sumitomo. His legacy extends beyond professional success, marked by his role as an ambassador for COA and his invaluable contributions to student recruitment in the machining technology program.Reflecting Sumitomo’s dedication to nurturing future talent, the company recently presented the College of The Albemarle Foundation with a generous $15,000 contribution to the scholarship endowment fund.

“We recognize the importance of investing in the next generation of machining professionals,” stated Tony Barlett, Vice President of Operations. “COA’s graduates enter the workforce well prepared, which supports our commitment to excellence and innovation. We are proud to support initiatives like the Cliff Markham Memorial Machinist Scholarship that foster talent and honor individuals like Cliff, whose legacy continues to inspire.”

The scholarship’s first awards will be issued for the 2024-2025 academic year, advancing COA’s effort to empower students in machining. Applicants must apply to College of The Albemarle before submitting their scholarship applications online at www.albemarle.edu/scholarships.

COA’s Computer-Integrated Machining curriculum equips students with the analytical, creative, and innovative skills for navigating modern production processes. From conceptualization to production, students undergo comprehensive training in manual machining, computer applications, engineering design, and precision measurement, among other areas.

“The partnership with Sumitomo is an excellent example of the value of industry collaboration in enhancing educational opportunities,” remarked Michelle Waters, COA Dean of Business, Industry and Advanced Technologies, and COA – Currituck Administrator. “Through partnerships like this, we provide our students with access to resources that help prepare them for success in the machining industry and beyond.”
