College of The Albemarle Associate Degree Nursing Program Receives Eight-Year Reaccreditation

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – College of The Albemarle’s (COA) Associate Degree Nursing (A.D.N.) program has received reaccreditation for a full eight-year term from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and continued approval from the North Carolina Board of Nursing, reaffirming the program’s quality and long-standing commitment to student success.

The eight-year reaccreditation is the maximum term awarded by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and reflects sustained compliance with national standards related to curriculum, faculty qualifications, student outcomes, and ongoing program improvement. Approval by the North Carolina Board of Nursing confirms the program meets all state requirements for preparing graduates for registered nurse licensure.

“This reaccreditation speaks to the dedication and professionalism of our nursing faculty and the determination of our students,” said Robin Harris, dean of health sciences at College of The Albemarle. “Our program is built on high expectations, strong clinical partnerships, and a commitment to preparing graduates who are ready to meet the demands of today’s healthcare environment.”

The A.D.N. program supports the region’s healthcare workforce by preparing graduates to serve in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings throughout northeastern North Carolina and beyond.

Naia Mitchell, a 2025 A.D.N. graduate, receives her nursing pin during the May pinning ceremony.

“An eight-year reaccreditation is a meaningful affirmation of program quality and consistency,” said COA President Dr. Jack Bagwell. “It reflects the college’s focus on academic excellence, workforce alignment, and preparing students for careers that directly impact the health and well-being of our communities.”

Dr. Jennifer Lopes, vice president of learning, said the reaccreditation reflects the college’s emphasis on instructional quality and continuous evaluation.

“This recognition demonstrates the strength of our academic processes and the commitment of our faculty to continuous improvement,” Lopes said. “Through regular review of curriculum, instruction, and clinical experiences, the program ensures students are well prepared for licensure and professional practice.”

The reaccreditation comes as COA continues to see strong interest in its nursing programs. Applications for the A.D.N. program are currently being accepted, with a January 15 deadline for the upcoming cohort. Prospective students interested in pursuing a career in nursing are encouraged to apply early.
