Phlebotomy Program
College of The Albemarle’s (COA) Phlebotomy classes provide theory and clinical experiences needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on:
- Ethics
- Legalities
- Medical terminology
- Safety and universal precautions
- Healthcare delivery systems
- Patient relations
- Anatomy and physiology
- Specimen collection
Upon completion, you should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various healthcare settings and may be eligible for national certification as a phlebotomy technician.
Prerequisites
Testing/Reading requirements: High school diploma/GED or Reading placement test score or college-level English with a 10th-grade reading level, or CASAS score of “244 – 248” (maximum of two tests, at least seven days apart, within 90 days, then recommend remediation prior to testing again for a third try)
Hours
Class/lab: 112 hours (8 weeks)
Clinical: 144 hours (8 weeks – onsite clinical hours + online coursework)
Total hours: 256 (16 weeks)
