Developmental Education
Beginning Summer 2025, College of The Albemarle implemented a prerequisite model for developmental courses, providing students an opportunity to complete gateway math and English within their first year of enrollment.
New students who graduated from a US high school will be placed based on their unweighted HS GPA:
- 2.8 or higher — students may register for any gateway English or math course.
- Below 2.8 — students must successfully pass ENG 025 and MAT 025 or MAT 035 before enrolling in a gateway English or math course.
Note: Unweighted high school GPA* from a United States High School is a primary method for placement into gateway English and Mathematics courses. When the unweighted high school GPA is below 2.8, a secondary placement measure may be used. Such measures include the EdReady placement test, SAT, ACT, High School Equivalency Test, and HiSET scores.
